The combination of an award winning local authority as well as a large and dynamic NHS trust makes Havering an attractive proposition for anyone looking to further their career. Whilst obviously different, Havering Council and Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT) stand amongst the best in their shared values and commitment to their employees and developing them to achieve their fullest potential.
BHRUT has one of the busiest emergency departments in the country, serving a population of 700,000 and seeing an average of 670 patients every day. On top of this they have created a centre of excellence for areas such as Neuroscience, Stroke and Maternity services.
Those joining BHRUT will discover a Trust that places a great deal of importance on offering a genuine community to its staff. Social events, sports teams and an incredible support structure are just a few of the ways that staff are made to feel happy at work and part of a family.
Havering not only has a large, growing population but it has also become a popular location for business, the ambitious regeneration plans will only see this increase. As a result, Havering Council has become a leading local authority, setting the standards for service provision and customer care.
Due to the challenging yet rewarding work on offer, the council has developed teams of ambitious individuals keen to be part of the big plans and exciting projects to come.
An award-winning local authority and a large and dynamic NHS trust make Havering an attractive proposition for anyone looking to further their career.
We recognise that the successes of our organisations are owed to the people within them. Without the hard work of our employees, we would be unable to fulfil our commitments to our patients, residents and visitors.
Because we know how valuable our people are, we ensure that we invest in them accordingly. Whether this be through the significant training and development opportunities that are made available to them or significant benefits and rewards schemes that have been put in place.
We make it our business to ensure that our employees are healthy, happy and able to enjoy fulfilling lives, both inside and outside the workplace.
We take pride in the working culture we have created, one that actively promotes respect, collaboration and support. This culture can be found throughout our offices and hospitals at every level. Our managers’ doors are always open and even the most senior figures are heavily involved in the day to day goings on of their organisations.
Joining any one of the high achieving, award winning employers in Havering will bring you into an environment where you can truly thrive.
It is a solid belief of ours that our people carry out their best work, not as a result of being pushed to work long hours but by enjoying a happy, fulfilling life outside of work.
We are committed to promoting a healthy work life balance throughout our hospitals and the council. We do what we can to provide our staff with ample opportunities to pursue their passions and hobbies.
It’s by no means all hard work with us and we feel that this has allowed us to create happy and vibrant working environments.
Training & Development
We also invest heavily in our people, making sure that they are offered the training and development opportunities that will allow them to realise their full potential.
This ensures that our people are fully equipped to properly serve our patients, residents and communities and play a key role in our ambitious plans. We also want to help our people develop and achieve their dreams. Our training opportunities are designed to prepare employees for future progression as we grow the team from the bottom up.
We firmly believe that our best work is achieved when our staff collaborate with each other, sharing experience, knowledge and expertise. We also ensure that all members of the team have an opportunity to have their say in how our services are run, suggesting ideas for improvements and raising any concerns.
We actively seek feedback from our patients and the local community. It is very important to us that the members of our communities have a voice so we can ensure that their needs are properly met.
Many of our staff live locally too, so they are able to make a direct impact in the lives of their families too through their work.
Benefits & Staff Rewards
It is incredibly important to us that our staff feel properly rewarded for the work they do. Both BHRUT and Havering Council have put together fantastic benefits packages that provide a range of opportunities to pursue your passions and interests as well as a range of discount schemes.

It’s very important to us that our team of employees are happy in their work and we recognise the integral role that management play in this.
We promote an open door policy throughout our hospitals and council, ensuring that all staff have a manager who they feel is accessible and approachable. We consider this to be crucial for both effective professional development and securing an open dialogue to ensure positive workplace relationships.
When joining BHRUT and Havering Council, you can be assured that you will have a manager who is looking out for your best interests and who will help you to develop whilst genuinely listening to you.
Health & Wellbeing
Along with our residents, workers, patients and visitors, the happiness and wellbeing of our staff are our utmost priority. We do everything we can to encourage our people to live healthy lives and provide all the support we can to make this as easy as possible. Health and wellbeing programmes have been put in place throughout the council and hospitals to help our people look after themselves.
Apprentices, Volunteers & Work Experience
In order to provide the level of support our staff need, we are incredibly lucky to have a significant network of apprentices and work experience students.
BHRUT’s newly launched apprenticeship programme will see 250 individuals join teams throughout our hospitals. Taking on medical and clinical roles, the one-year scheme will give participants crucial experience working in a hospital setting, developing vital skills and earning a wage whilst they do it. Despite popular perception, apprenticeships aren’t just for the young, our oldest apprentice to date was 71!
Our work experience programmes have also become extremely popular and provide young people with a unique insight into hospital life. We have 50 places per year where young people can come and be a part of the teams for two weeks.
At Havering Council, there are a range of apprenticeship opportunities across the organisation. Our apprentices work on a two-year fixed term contract and are paid up to £124 a week. All apprentices also receive training for NVQ Level Two and Three qualifications. The schemes are designed to allow ambitious young people to develop the skills they will need to pursue successful careers.

Romford is fast becoming one of the most popular destinations for those being priced out of central London, but it is not just its proximity to the capital that is bringing people here. Areas such as Hornchurch, Upminster and Rainham offer a great deal, whether it be stunning nature, scenic and affordable housing and a thriving arts scene.
There are bold plans for the future of our local area. Havering has been allocated a significant amount of funding that will enable large scale regeneration over the next five years. These plans will see the face of the borough transformed through a range of developments, bringing a variety of new homes as well as leisure and shopping facilities.
Known as the Romford Development Framework, the plans will see a multi-million-pound leisure complex take pride of place alongside 350,000 new homes. The thriving art scene in the area will also receive significant investment.
The plans will also see public areas rejuvenated, creating high quality and modern urban spaces that will serve a variety of purposes.
This investment will see Havering, take their place as a borough of the future.

In 2015, Havering Council launched a unique initiative as Liberty Housing opened its doors. The council-run letting agency aims to ensure that Havering’s residents have more access to high-quality rented accommodation.
The agency works closely with landlords, providing a range of benefits which in turn allow them to offer more help and better rates for their tenants.
There are so many options for those looking to make Havering their home.

Despite feeling far removed from the bustle of Central London, the attractions of the capital are really just a stone’s throw away. Our main towns are well served by rail services that make travelling in and out of London incredibly easy. This will only be boosted by the brand new Cross Rail, currently being built and set to open in 2018.
There are various routes into London including the London Underground via the District Line and direct overground trains from Romford.
A train from Romford to London Liverpool Street, takes just 17 minutes!
When you need to get away, Havering has excellent links to nearby motorways including the M25. This makes London’s airports easily accessible as well as Southend and Stansted.

I have been working as a Band 7 Occupational Therapist at Queens Hospital for just over one year now. I can honestly say it has been the best work related move I have made in my career to date. We have a large friendly team, who are very dynamic and supportive, managers who encourage and empower you to develop your skills and knowledge to help improve patient care and services. Personally, I think it is also refreshing to see the Trust acknowledge and highlight group and individual achievements which really makes staff feel valued. I have seen a lot of positive change in a short period of time within our department and around BHRUT as a whole so I am looking forward with anticipation to the next year ahead
BHRUT is an exciting, dynamic and valuable place to work, we offer so many opportunities for the nursing profession. We are committed to providing and achieving outstanding patient care through our PRIDE values and we need you to help us on that journey to excellence.
